The original distillery is situated in the harbour of Wick, where the salty sea air profoundly influences every stage of the distillate’s natural maturation. Gordon & MacPhail has skilfully selected casks of exceptional quality to preserve the energetic and vibrant style typical of younger bottlings. This specific edition, dating from the 1990s, offers a historical perspective on how the mineral character was interpreted by the master distillers of that era. Every drop encapsulates the power of the North Sea combined with the smoothness of the finest grains, selected with meticulous care. Owning a bottle of this sort means possessing a piece of history that will never again be reproduced on an industrial scale. The eight-year maturation process has preserved the original freshness of the spirit distilled in the coastal warehouses. Connoisseurs seek out these vintage releases for the purity of their aromas, which evoke the tradition of the wildest and most isolated parts of the Highlands.

Organoleptic profile of ‘Malto Marino’ from the 1990s

On tasting, a distinctive salty note is immediately apparent, balanced by a very clean and elegant sweetness of barley malt. The nose reveals hints of green apple, a sea breeze and a subtle touch of fresh lemon zest. The texture of the Old Pulteney Vintage Whisky It is oily and enveloping, leaving a lingering hint of minerality and toasted grains. No alcoholic notes seem out of place, thanks to the skilful selection made by the experts at the historic Gordon & MacPhail family. You will notice how time has rounded off the sharpest edges, transforming them into a truly refined and pleasant herbaceous complexity. Many tasters appreciate the dry finish, which continually stimulates the palate’s curiosity during every single tasting session. This whisky demonstrates how even moderate ageing can evoke profound emotions if the raw material is of the highest quality.

The unique character of the spirit of the Northern Highlands

Wick’s geographical location plays a key role in shaping this sensory profile, which is so markedly influenced by the surrounding area. This Old Pulteney Vintage Whisky It benefits from constant exposure to ocean winds, which silently seep through the wooden staves of the selected casks.
